ABOUT M/Y BARREL

Preserving The Herritage

Before she came to Klaipėda, BARREL had a previous owner from Hamburg, Germany. Every summer, spanning from 1978 to 2023, BARREL spent endless hours cruising the waters of the North Sea, the Elbe River, and of course the Baltic Sea.

Armed with this knowledge (knowing where she came from, her previous owners, and her story, gleaned from proving documents in shipyard archives), we came up with a unique vision. We aim to reintroduce her to the public as a symbol of a forgotten jewel of maritime history. Inspired by Arne Jacobsen’s focus on holistic design, we’ve embarked on a project to elevate the interior and onboard comfort to a degree that is extraordinary among our peers.

For centuries, the unmistakable warmth and elegance of teak decks and rich mahogany interiors reigned supreme in boat building. However, the arrival of fiberglass in the mid-20th century revolutionized shipbuilding, ushering in an era of white “plastic” boats and streamlined, contemporary design. While fiberglass offered undeniable advantages in terms of weight, maintenance, and affordability, it lacked the timeless beauty and natural character of wood. Luckily, today, real wood remains a coveted material, gracing only the most prestigious yachts as a testament to unparalleled craftsmanship and enduring luxury.

The boat has recently been completely restored, maintaining as much of the original parts and details as possible. Original paneling, furniture – everything is kept original, admiring both, classical maritime and Scandinavian design of the 70’s. The goal was to preserve the heritage of a classic private leisure boat, combining it with a modern hospitality approach and adding some local extra resulting in a one of a kind experience.

ABOUT M/Y BARREL

Story Behind “Barrel”

In 2010 we, Janis Žekanis, Eliza Šubert, and our canine companion, a Weimaraner named Barrel, started a lifetime journey of exploring the Curonian Lagoon. First, with a motor yacht, followed by wooden hand-made canoes of our own production. We named our venture “Wet Weim Adventures” after our dog, which transcribes as Wet Weimaraner. Ironically, but 14 years later we called our boat “Barrel”. It seemed like its a perfect match.  If you search for a definition of “Barrel” you will most likely encounter the phrase “we barrelled across the Everglades” – which means to drive or move in a way that is so fast as to almost be out of control. The acquisition process of this boat itself mirrored the spirit of our namesake, requiring a certain degree of swiftness and resourcefulness. In other words, we literally Barrelled across the Baltics.
